Dr. Nickolas Culpepper, M.D., Psychiatry

FOUNDER OF SUGI PSYCHIATRY & WELLNESS

Nickolas Culpepper, M.D.

The key element that patients love about Dr. Nickolas Culpepper is his quest to treat the whole person. He recognizes that by the time individuals knock on his door, they’ve already seen their primary care physician and frequently, tried at least three medications without success. They are frustrated and looking for help. In-line with the kintsugi philosophy, “Dr. C.” believes that by repairing what is broken, we become more unique and resilient.

With two science degrees (BS Civil and Environmental Engineering and BS Earth and Atmospheric Sciences) from the prestigious Georgia Institute of Technology plus a medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia, this doctor looks at breakthroughs in science to help those who are experiencing treatment-resistant depression. His Reno office offers NeuroStar TMS Therapy (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Therapy) sessions to aid with depression. He is also well-versed in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

From his residency at the University of California Davis and his fellowship at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, Dr. C. was introduced to the world of forensic psychiatry: diagnosing and treating mental disorders within the criminal justice system. He built upon that knowledge base when he came to Reno and started working with adults at Reno Behavioral Healthcare Hospital.

In 2020, Dr. C. founded Great Basin Psychiatry, which was rebranded in 2023 to Sugi Psychiatry & Wellness to reflect his unique approach to health. Today, he balances his life with his wife and two four small daughters.
